Weekly Bonus for the week of April 2, 2010:

This assignment is due at the start of class on Tuesday, April 6. As usual, failure to completely answer the questions will result in no points awarded. And remember: There is no partial credit awarded for Bonus Questions. Ever. Don't bother asking.

Enjoy!

Leupeptin is an inhibitor of serine and cysteine proteases. The structure of leupeptin is below:

Leupeptin

The inhibitor works by forming a covalent hemiacetal adduct between the aldehyde group in the inhibitor and the serine hydroxyl functional group in the active site of the protease.

1) Draw the structure of the covalent enzyme/inhibitor complex. You only need to show the side chain atoms of the catalytic residue in the enzyme and the key atoms of the inhibitor involved in the complex.

2) Looking at the structure of leupeptin, what is a more descriptive name for the compound. (In other words, could you break the molecule down into discrete fragments that have common chemical names?)

Successful completion of this exercise will result in 10 points being awarded to you.
