Weekly Bonus for the week of April 11, 2010:
This assignment is due at the start of class on Thurssday, April 15. As usual, failure to completely answer the questions will result in no points awarded. And remember: There is no partial credit awarded for Bonus Questions. Ever. Don't bother asking.
Enjoy this 2 part problem!
a) Draw all of the chemical reactions of glycolysis. You must show the structure of the reactants and products. You must show the name of the enzyme that catalyzes each step. You must label the control points in the pathway. You must show the total energy balance of the pathway.
b) Another pathway exists by which cells can metabolize glucose to pyruvate, a pathway called the Entner-Duoderoff pathway. The novel feature of this pathway is the cleavage of 6-phosphogluconate to yield pyruvate and glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate. Draw all of the chemical reactions of this pathway. What parts of the two pathways are similar? What parts are different? Which pathway would you prefer your cells use and why?
Successful completion of this exercise will result in 10 points being awarded to you. |
