Chemistry Majors Win ACS Piedmont Section Scholarship and Research Award (April 15, 2002)

In April 2002, Melissa Backman was selected by the Piedmont section of the American Chemical Society as the recipient of the leadership award annually given to recognize an undergraduate in the Central Carolinas region. A May 2002 graduate, Melissa majored in chemistry, served in a leadership capacity for the student affiliate of the American Chemical Society, and orchestrated a number of chemical demonstrations at the York County Museum during national chemistry week. She will be entering dental school at the Medical University of South Carolina in the fall of 2002.
 
In April 2002, Lisa Hansen has been selected by the Piedmont section of the American Chemical Society as the recipient of the research award annually given to recognize an undergraduate in the Central Carolinas region. A May 2002 graduate, Lisa's research, under the direction of Dr. T. Christian Grattan, focused on the chemical synthesis of nucleoside transport inhibitors have potential for use in cancer chemotherapy.  Lisa plans to enter a Ph.D. program in Natural Products or Medicinal Chemistry in the fall of 2003.
