General Chemistry II: Problem Set 4

1.      Draw the resonance structures for a glycine-glycine peptide bond by showing the six atoms involved in the peptide bond along with their respective bonds and charges for each resonance structure.

2.      Draw all acid/base forms of the amino acid serine; show all bonds, charges and lone electron pairs for each of your structures.

3.      Determine which of the following are chiral molecules; fully support each answer:

a.      CH3CHBrCH2CH3

b.      CH3CH2CH2CH2Br

c.       CH3CHOHCOOH

d.      CH2OHCH2COOH

4.      Review problem: Para-dichlorobenzene has a log P value of 3.37.  100 ml of water are mixed with 50 ml of octanol.  200 mg of para-dichlorobenzene are added to this mixture which is then well shaken.  Calculate the amount (mass) of para-dichlorobenzene that will partition to the 1-octanol phase at equilibrium.
