Text: Physical Chemistry, P.W. Atkins, 1997, 6th ed.
Course Objectives:

Develop problem solving quantitative skills
-
Gain a fundmental appreciation for the physical laws and mathematical principles
governing atomic-scale particles.

Understand the key principles of quantum chemistry, group theory, molecular
spectroscopy, and statistical mechanics.

Demonstrate and understand the use of computational tools to calculate
atomic and molecular properties.

Develop an understanding of the interaction of EMR with atomic and molecular
systems
Outline: This is the first half of Physical Chemistry. During
this semester we will cover all of Part II - Structure, Chapters 11-23
of the text. These topics will be examined:
Quantum theory
Translational/rotational/vibrational/electronic energies
Group theory
Electronic/vibrational/rotational spectroscopy
Magnetic resonance
X-Ray diffraction
Statistical mechanics
Molecular electric/magnetic properties
Macromolecules.
Class Preparation: For each class I recommend that you do the following:
1. Read assigned lesson for upcoming lecture, take notes
2. Work assigned problems
3. Review previous lecture notes and chapter objectives
4. Rework previously assigned problems
Maaterials Required for Each Class: Text, Math text, Calculator,
Pencil, and Paper
Graded Exercises
1. Problem Sets: As shown on the syllabus, problem sets
will periodically be required. Each set will be worth 30 points.
2. Homework: Assigned homework problems for each
chapter are to be turned in on the first attendance after the chapter has
been completed. These will be weighted a total of 100 points for
the entire semester.
3. Tests: Three 100 point tests will be given. They are
tentatively scheduled as follows:

Test 1 September 28 - Chapters 11,1 2,13,14

Test 2 November 2 - Chapters 15,16,17,18

Test 3 December 4 - Chapters 19,20,21,22,23
4. Final: The final exam will cover the entire course
and will be worth 300 points. The exam will include a standardized
American Chemical Society Test.
Grades: (You must score better than 50% on the final exam to pass
the course)
A: 88-100%
B: 76-87%
C: 66-76%
D: 56-66%
Attendance: You are expected to attend all class meetings
for the full scheduled time.
