NSF Chem-STEM Scholarship Applications Being Sought
Applications are being sought for three Chem-STEM scholarships,
each for up to $5,000 annually, that will be awarded in December 2012.
To be eligible for these NSF scholarships, applicants must already be
chemistry majors or must be willing to change their major to chemistry.
Scholarships will only be awarded for students with unmet financial need
as determined from Winthrop's Cost of Attendance minus the student's
Expected Family Contribution determined from the completed 2012 FAFSA,
minus all other grants, scholarships and awards.
Students interested in applying must complete the application
form and email it in a single pdf file to Dr. Kathie Snyder by the
November 30 deadline. Applicants must also arrange for their current
chemistry instructor to email a completed Chem STEM faculty
recommendation form to Dr Snyder by the application deadline.
NSF Chem-STEM for Chemistry and Biochemistry at Winthrop University
On April 11, 2012, Winthrop's Chemistry and Biochemistry Program was competitively selected for a $598,500 National Science Foundation Grant for the sole purpose of awarding scholarships to chemistry and biochemistry students at Winthrop with academic potential and financial need. This is a five year grant with a start date of July 1, 2012. Initial scholarship award selections will be made by the end of 2012 for the 2012-2013 academic year.
The Chem-STEM Scholars Program will recruit 41 academically talented and financially needy students into chemistry and biochemistry over the five years of the project. Selected Chem-STEM Scholars will share a common curriculum involving degree tracks meeting American Chemical Society (ACS) guidelines for a professional undergraduate education. Based on historical matriculation patterns at the university, both freshmen and sophomore entry points are being used to recruit students. Entering 2012-2016 freshmen cohorts have $5,000 scholarships available; all scholars remaining in good standing are supported for four years. 2012-2015 sophomore cohorts, comprised primarily of students from other majors or transfers, have $5,000 scholarships available; all sophomore scholars maintaining satisfactory progress are supported for three years. At the end of the project, Winthrop University is sustaining Chem-STEM scholarships for NSF-funded cohorts who have not yet graduated.
The Chem-STEM Scholarship Award is the first NSF S-STEM Scholarship Grant ever won by WInthrop University.
