CHEM 101 WRITING ASSIGNMENTS

Grading Rubric:

Assignments must be typed in a 12 point font, double-spaced, with margins of 1 inch (max). Each assignment must be a maximum of 3 pages (excluding references, tables, and figures). Each assignment is worth 50 points and will be graded for both content and writing as follows:

25	Outstanding explanation; superior understanding; goes well beyond minimum required for the assignment
20	Good solid job on explanation; excellent understanding; goes beyond minimum required for the assignment
15	Good solid job on explanation; does what assignments asks
10	Decent explanation, but too general or some inaccuracies; does not meet minimum required for assignment
5	Doesn’t effectively address assignment; inadequate understanding; major flaws

Writing

Grade	Criteria
25	Meets criteria for a 20, but also has a sense of style, going beyond grammatical correctness to real readability
20	Excellent organization; interesting sentences and good grammar; few spelling errors, does not read like a first draft
15	Decent organization; reads like a first draft; a paper with excellent writing will still earn a 15 if it contains many spelling errors and is clearly not proofread
10	Disorganized; awkward sentence structure; poor grammar; poor spelling
5	Similar problems as 10, but worse
