B.S. Degree

Chemistry and Biochemistry (both approved by the American Chemical Society)

Winthrop University provides a flexible B.S. Chemistry and Biochemistry curriculum with six available programs of study (American Chemical Society (ACS) Approved Chemistry, ACS Approved Biochemistry, Environmental chemistry, Forensics Chemistry, multidisciplinary, and chemistry-engineering) that are targeted to meet a diverse range of student interests, whether they be professional schools (medical, dental, pharmacy, patent law); graduate studies (chemistry, biochemistry, forensics, nanotechnology, environmental engineering, neuroscience, biotechnology); or industrial opportunities (chemicals, pharmaceuticals, plastics, cosmetics, foods & flavor, environmental health).

The table below provides recommendations on programs of study to consider for various professional goals. Each chemistry major also meets with a faculty advisor several times each year to discuss their professional goals, to update their academic program, and to identify any specific needs or questions they may have. Chemistry majors are also strongly encouraged to participate in semester or summer research fellowships at national labs/graduate universities and in summer internships with industry.  The location of Winthrop within the Charlotte regions affords students the opportunity to gain valuable experience in many of these fields.
