Appendix C: Laboratory Safety Inspection Check List

The following will be checked during lab inspections:

 

General Safety

o    Emergency phone numbers posted on the lab door

o    Warning signs posted on doors and/or in the lab

o    Emergency procedures and evacuation routes posted?

o    Is a copy of the CHP accessible

o    MSDS' maintained and readily available

o    Current inventory of chemicals is maintained and available

o    Exits unobstructed

o    Are refrigerators and freezers for storage of food labeled as such and located in an area were chemicals are not stored or used

o    Emergency lights working

 

Laboratory Safety

o    Fume hoods free of clutter

o    Aisles are unobstructed

o    Lab benches and work areas free of clutter

o    Shelves and cabinets secured to the wall

o    Fire blanket available if open flames or flammable chemicals are used routinely

o    Fire extinguishers readily available and unobstructed

o    Fire extinguishers tagged and inspected in the last month

o    Safety showers/eye wash stations accessible and clearly labeled

o    Safety shower inspected and tested in the past year

o    Eye wash station inspected and tested in the past week

o    Refrigerators and freezers for chemical use clearly labeled as such

 

Compressed gases

o    Cylinders stored upright and properly secured

o    Are caps properly secured on cylinders not in use

o    Cylinders in use equipped with a regulator

o    Cylinders in good condition and clearly marked with the name of contents, the appropriate hazard warnings, and a status tag

 

Chemical Storage

o    Chemicals stored according to compatibility

o    Flammables stored in flammable cabinets and labeled appropriately

o    Ignition sources avoided when using/storing flammables

o    Corrosive chemicals stored in acid cabinets and labeled appropriately

o    Storage of chemicals above 5 feet is minimized

o    Chemical containers in good condition

o    Chemicals clearly labeled with the name of the chemical and the appropriate hazards

o    Containers labeled with the receipt date, date opened and barcode

o    Containers closed unless actively being used

o    Spill control materials readily available- Absorbent, scraper and scoop, waste bag, waste labels, goggles, gloves, sharpie

 

Satellite Accumulation Areas for Hazardous Waste

o    Hazardous waste containers properly labeled with hazardous waste and contents of container.

o    Waste containers properly closed

o    Waste containers free of chemical residue on outside of bottle

o    Satellite accumulation point labeled

o    Waste is stored only in the satellite accumulation point

o    Waste containers not filled more than 80%
